Derby Hopefuls

Yesterday's Christmas comment was fun. I was watching sports center and reading the bottom line when the previous day's horse race winners were being shown. I noticed the winner of the Illinois Derby was Christmas Cat. I'm not sure if this is a three-year old and therefore eligible for the Derby, but if he is, he will be deamed as my favorite name of the year. Last year will be tough to compete with, names such as Sinister Minister, Bluegrass Cat and Sweetnorthernsaint (personal favorite), but Christmas Cat is pretty cool. While I am at it, I will give my early serious pick for the Derby. On Saturday I saw the Santa Anita Derby. Tiago came from fourth position on the home stretch and showed some serious closing speed. He shows a lot of promise and with a four week break to Churchill Downs, put Tiago on the board, he'll be tough to beat. A little background on the horse: his sire is that of Giacomo, 2005 Derby winner.

Gopher Sp[orts?

March 28, 2007: Not much has been going in my world of Christmas, so let's break another rule, and talk about Gopher sports. As I have had a chance to reflect on the new acusation in Minnesota, i.e. Tubby Smith, I decided a few comments should be made. I really couldn't be happier about this because it is the first time any Minnesota sports team has drawn a high profile coach. Professional or college. Maybe this will start a trend that propells our sports teams unto greater heights. And what a great move for Tubby, hated in Kentucky, he will become the most loved man in Minnesota if he gets the team to the tournament. Kentucky fans (although I am one) are far too much like Yankee fans. They are only happy unless they win a tournament, and then it is more relief than joy. Let's see what happens. Go Gopher Basketball! (The football team still sucks)

Grumpy Old Man?

Wed. March 21, 2007: Well we enter into the first day of Spring, and for me, it would not be such a day if I did not hear a little Christmas music. Of course I did when I turned on TBS at 11:00 p.m. only to see the classic movie “Grumpy Old Men”. For those who haven’t seen it, the movie is set in the cold Minnesota winter. On this night however, it was not the Christmas music which stirred my thoughts, instead it was the two senile old men. I began wondering what I will be like at 75. It should be a smooth transition, i.e. my journey into senility. I made an attempt to see which character I most closely associated with. Max (Walter Matheau) has a comeback for everything, edgy, mean, and of course crazy; while John (Jack Lemmon) is sweet, kind, and of course crazy. Score 1 for Max. Max likes hockey while John likes classical music. Score 2 for Max. Max hasn’t a clue with the ladies, John is smooth. We have a winner. I guess I most closely identify with Max. Of course this makes me think, do I really have to turn into this? Not necessarily, maybe I should be nicer to people, branch out a little.

Sat. March 17, 2007: Saturday morning, I recieved a second phone call. Once again it was a call to carry furniture. The object we shall refer to as "The Unit, Part II". I decided to help. My mother was right, I am a nice person. The Christmas comment came later that morning when Beth apologized to Katy's brother for ruining his sister's Christmas present: Friends Scene It. Apparently they both got her the same thing.

Fri. March 16, 2007: I recieved a phone call at around 8:30 in the morning from one of my friends. He asked me if I could help him move a couple of things from the truck to his fiance's (?) (I don't know how to spell that exactly so we'll say future wife's) new apartment. Among the items was a makeshift Christmas tree. A pathetic display, I have not seen worse. A leafy tree with lights still on it, I decided not to make fun of him to his face, but to be a coward and make fun of him on my blog.

Life's Crazy

Well, I'll be honest, it has been a crazy two months for me, hence not updating my blog. The death of a beloved grandmother, the loss of a job (sort of) and making attempts to finish my degree, I just have not had time to tell everybody about the times I hear Christmas and to share satire with my loyal readers. I also did not think anybody really read my blog, but due to popular demand, I will make attempts to begin writing again. Unfortunately, on the day that I begin writing, I have not heard Christmas. I will however mention that over the last two months, on most of the days, I heard the word in some way or another.

Sun. Jan. 21, 2007: I typically attempt to rid my apartment of Christmas cards and what not by January 5, but my freind John's apartment was not the case as he still has not taken down these cards. Also in small group, a number of the members mentioned their Christmas break.

Sat. Jan. 20, 2007: Buster happened to say Christmas on that morning about something or other. It's been four days of crap since then.

Fri., Jan 19, 2007: After a day without hearing the word, my assistant manager saved the day by mentioned she has her husband's company Christmas party tomorrow night.
